As you all know Clemson and our Brotherhood recently lost George Bennett, an icon not only for all Tigers but also a KDX/EN brother who played a critical role in the founding of our Chapter. For those who may not know George's history beyond his contributions to Clemson Athletics and Iptay, he was advisor to the first KDX class to be initiated into Sigma Nu after it's National Charter and is fondly remembered for going through initiation as a "regular pledge" in spite of being in his mid 30's. Beside him through all these years was his beloved wife Nancy who also as a Clemson grad was always at George's right hand in his endeavors for Clemson.
Upon their passing, there was quickly a groundswell of support from many KDX and EN Alums to find a way to honor both George and Nancy in some visible and lasting way. As a result the Alumni Council and a number of others worked to identify options that would honor them accordingly and were supported by the Bennett family. Several of those options were scholarship endowments of differing forms and also a naming opportunity for George and Nancy outside the Iptay offices at the stadium. After reviewing the pros and cons of the options and the Bennett family's perspective, the naming opportunity was deemed to be the preferred choice. While the naming opportunity will require a successful fundraising campaign, over the last few weeks it has gained significant momentum including an initial $50,000 pledge from our Sigma Nu Alumni fund. Additionally, the project has received two other large individual donations and KDX Alumni Buddy Thompson has issued a $50,000 challenge to his fellow KDX Brothers to participate. These contributions have put the project well on it's way to meeting the needed funds with additional individual contributions yet to be made. Listed below are some details of the project as well as how you can contribute individually if you wish to do so. Clearly any and all amounts will be greatly appreciated and no amount is too small.
- While all the specific details of exactly where a naming sign for George and Nancy would be mounted are not finalized, it would most likely go on the side of the Iptay offices facing Stadium Gate 9. The style of the sign itself will probably align with the naming signs posted above all the stadium entrance gates. We have also discussed mounting a plaque on the same wall listing George's notable contributions to Clemson Athletics as well as mention of his leadership of KDX/EN.
- Any individual contribution or pledge you wish to make should be sent to the attention of Drew Waddell at Clemson Iptay who will be on point to track individual contributions and ensure proper Iptay credit is given for each. Please identify that your gift is for the George and Nancy Bennett naming fund. You can contribute in any fashion that you would normally use for any Iptay contribution. You should contact Drew directly via phone for credit card and stock transactions. Please do not send credit card info via email to protect your card security. Drew's email is akwadde@clemson,edu and his work phone is 864-656-1481. Please note that you will receive IPTAY PRIORITY points for your contribution. These are priority points and not credits to be used in payment of your annual Iptay dues.
Please consider contributing to this effort to honor one of Clemson's finest and a man who was instrumental in helping build the foundation for the Brotherhood we enjoy today.
